Robert Johnson
I must confess that I’m obsessed with Robert Johnson’s music. I first heard about his life, and the legends behind his guitar playing on the movie crossroads. His music seemed to show up in every movie that i was watching after that from supernatural to cant you hear the wind howl. His music has been referenced in song by Eric Clapton to Rory Block. There something so wonderful about a great mystery, and there’s so many legends that follow around Robert Johnson and his music. The first legend is that Robert sold his soul to the devil at the crossroad in exchange for his great musical talent. They say that’s why his music has titles and topics such as hell hounds on my trail, crossroad blues, and me and the devil. Other stories say that he met an African god who blessed him with his musical abilities. There’s even a legends that Robert Johnson had a missing song that was yet to be published before his mysterious death. Many people thought his friend Willie brown had the song, but if he did he never published it before his death of heart trouble. His music without the legend is still oddly captivating, and his life even more so. Even if you don’t believe the legends one has to wonder where he disappeared to for about two years and returned as a guitar legends. They say he couldn’t even play guitar before he left, and when he returned he wouldn’t tell anyone where he had been, and his playing became legendary. I love the emotion in his voice, and his guitar playing is wonderful. When i hear his music it’s as if i can feel all his pain, and all his worries through his music. His music has a great emotional quality. You can hear how his life has been a struggle in his music. I have no idea how he conveys so much with such limited lyrics. He just has this amazing gift for making you see his life, and live it with him for the duration of his song. The legend that surrounds his music makes him almost as popular as his music. His life is sometimes like watching a tornado it’s dangerous, and scary and dark, but at the end of the day it’s so fascinating that you just can’t look away.
